Do You Know Your Mendota Heights Neighbors?

Night to Unite on Tuesday is for residents to get to know each other and the police and firefighters that protect them.

If you haven't spent a lot of time talking to your neighbors, now is your chance.

Mendota Heights residents are organizing get-togethers as part of Night to Unite on Tuesday, Aug. 6.

One block party will be at the Mendota Heights Elementary School grounds Near the basketball court

On Night to Unite, or National Night Out, residents around the nation will have picnics and barbecues. Police officers and firefighters will stop by those parties to introduce themselves.

The purpose of the night is to strengthen the bonds between neighbors and public safety officers, and keep cities safer.

Residents can leave their outside lights on as a symbolic message that they want to fight back against crime.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for communities nationwide to promote police-community partnerships, crime prevention, and neighborhood camaraderie," said National Association of Town Watch Executive Director Matt Peskin. "While the one night is certainly not an answer to crime, drugs and violence, National Night Out represents the kind of spirit, energy and determination to help make neighborhoods a safer place year round."

Peskin started National Night Out in 1984.
