With the Fischerville Coffee House closing on Dec. 31, Mendota Heights is looking for a redevelopment planning grant from Dakota County to help rescue a historic property that has been plagued in recent years by continual owner turnover in a downturned economy, the Star Tribune is reporting. Frank Fischer opened a general store in the building 1924 and the property has retained the name of Fischerville ever since. But the coffee shop has changed ownership three times in as many years, and a recent deal to sell the building fell through. Bella Boutique and Fischerville Coffee House continue to change hands among Mendota Heights business owners. The two businesses rent space in the historic Fischerville building on Dodd Road. Both businesses, formerly owned by Cindy Schweiger, changed ownership in November and are now owned by another Mendota Heights woman, Susan Engelhart, who operates them with her husband Bob Engelhart. Susan said she approached the Schweigers in November about buying the businesses. The inspiration, she said, came from her husband Bob. Here's what you may have missed last week on Mendota Heights Patch: The District 197 School Board discussed plans for more information sessions with the public, but pushed back the anticipated timeline so that more information would be available. The council approved a purchase agreement for the old fire hall site on Dodd Road Tuesday. Mendota Heights resident Bernie Friel was featured Thursday. In my opinion, the recent owners had better coffee, better food, and larger portions while still having lower prices. Also, I was not a fan of having two olives with a toothpick through them instead of the pickle spear with the sandwich. Either way, it's unfortunate it had to close. more ›
