Minnesota's voting continues until 8 p.m. Central, but some polls in the East close two hours earlier and could give first clues as to whether Obama or Romney will win.
How soon will we get results from the presidential election? Voters in Mendota Heights and across Minnesota have until 8 p.m. to be in line at polling places to cast their Election 2012 ballots. But voting in other key states ends almost two hours earlier. Exit polling from the East Coast could provide an early indication of whether President Obama or Mitt Romney will win the White House. The most important state likely to have the earliest results is Virginia, where polls close when clocks strike 6 p.m. in Minnesota. Voting ends 30 minutes later in swing states Ohio and North Carolina. At 7 p.m. swing states Florida, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire close their polls. Nevada and Iowa, which could be pivotal swing states, close voting at 9 …
Will elected officials count on their constituents to remember their “promises and performances” and hold them accountable? Or do they hope voters will forget?
Dear Editor: Election Day is upon us. I look for candidates whose ideals most coincide with my values and will vote those same convictions. Will they count on their constituents to remember their “Promises and Performances” and hold them accountable? Or do they hope voters will forget? Joe Atkins said, and must believe, that people won’t remember from one campaign cycle to the next. However, some of us do. We continue to pay for his “Performances AND his Promises.” For example: As mayor, Atkins credits himself for building amenities “with no taxpayer dollars.” Despite cost cuts, the VMCC/Aquatic Center still loses nearly $500,000/year. Joe uses Target as an example of “streamlining tax codes and regulation.” Target started building and …

President Barack Obama's ground campaign and a shifting sentiment toward the two constitutional amendments have the state's DFL party feeling positive headed into Election Day.
Twin Cities Democrats think the state's most controversial issue–the amendment to the state's constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman–will fall flat on Tuesday, making Minnesota the first state to vote down such an amendment. In our survey of DFL influencers–local politicians and party activists–the Democrats also believe having the amendment issue on the ballot will be a boost for President Barack Obama, as he looks to defeat former Gov. Mitt Romney in Tuesday's presidential election. Of the 100 influencers who volunteered to take our survey, 24 responded to our "flash" poll, issued last Friday. Only a quarter of the responders thought the marriage amendment question would help Romney with turnout. The same …

"Ultan has repeatedly demonstrated that he cares deeply about our community," Jill Smith writes
Ultan Duggan is running for Mayor of Mendota Heights, where he has lived for over 36 years. I have known and worked in the community with Ultan for over 20 years. Ultan has repeatedly demonstrated that he cares deeply about our community and he has contributed his enthusiasm and leadership talents to many significant community issues and events. Beyond this, I find that an even greater strength of Ultan's is in HOW he leads, not alone, but by working with and inspiring others to join him. This is the way to build community and get great things done together. Jill Smith, Former Mendota Heights City Council Member

Looks like we're in for a barrage of political ads in coming days, as the Romney campaign takes aim at voters in western Wisconsin. Do you think that will make a difference?
So far, Minnesotans have been spared the barrage of political ads that are flooding the airwaves in Ohio and other so-called "swing states" where the close race between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney is likely to be decided. Now, according to a Huffington Post report Friday, that's about to change. The Romeny camp is increasingly convinced that it may be possible to win Wisconsin, and to increase their chances, they're making big ad buys in the major media markets, including the Twin Cities (where radio and television broadcast into western Wisconsin). Our question: Do you know anyone who's still undecided at this point? Are you? And if you are, what does either side need to do--or say in an advertisement--that will persuade you? Please …

(...continued from previous comment) When I ran against Joe Atkins a couple years ago, we were mainly getting $20 to $50 donations from locals. We had a couple fundraisers, but even then we were more interested in open access than the money generated. Nobody was turned away due to lack of funds. Yet, Joe Atkins sent the same sobbing plea to his constituents. "Donate to me because this guy is …   more ›
