Remembering Minnesota's Casualties of the Iraq War

The Iraq War claimed the lives of nearly 70 Minnesotans, among them Daniel Robert Olsen Herrgott from Eagan, Nathanael James Doring from Apple Valley, and Joshua Robert Hanson and Michael Charles Mettille from West St. Paul.

The 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago this week—on March 19, 2003—and although officially "over," violence continues with discouraging persistence. By one count, the war is directly responsible for 189,000 deaths, not including those who died from hardship caused by the fighting. In all, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, including nearly 70 Minnesotans. CNN has a stunning map of all casualties in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. Among them are Daniel Robert Olsen Herrgott from Eagan, Nathanael James Doring from Apple Valley, and Joshua Robert Hanson and Michael Charles Mettille from West St. Paul. We must continue to pay tribute and homage to our veterans who paid with their lives in the service of america. We also need to remember the families who suffered great pain in losing their loves ones to war. We need to tell them that america still cares and will always honor their loves ones who made the supreme sacrifice. gilbert de la O Combat Wounded Veteran ( Vietnam)   more ›

MINNEAPOLIS—Yesterday in federal court, a 48-year-old Red Lake man was sentenced for his role in a methamphetamine distribution ring. United States District Judge Susan R. Nelson sentenced Terry Lee Branchaud, also known as Niko Vinnie Gambino, to 156 months in federal prison on one count of aiding and abetting the distribution of five grams or more of actual methamphetamine. Branchaud, who was indicted on April 12, 2011 along with three co-defendants, pleaded guilty on January 30, 2012. In his plea agreement, Branchaud acknowledged that from February 25, 2010, through March 9, 2010, he conspired with others to distribute methamphetamine. Over the course of …

Seems like an awful lot of time for just conspiring to sell meth. May as well have manufactured it or committed some type of violent crime for that amount of time. Child molesters, rapists, and other predatory crimes get far, far less time than that. I'm not saying there isn't an epidemic out there with meth, because there is. I just feel the system is flawed in many ways. Drug crimes need more …   more ›
