Celebrating Rosh Hashanah 2012 in Mendota Heights

This Sunday, as the day draws to a close, the Jewish community will ring in year 5773 as part of their celebration of Rosh Hashanah, or the Jewish New Year. The festivities will continue until nightfall on Tuesday, Sept. 18. On Wednesday, Patch wrote about the schedule of High Holy Days services for Beth Jacob Congregation, Mendota Heights's 400-household synagogue. Rosh Hashanah, which literally means “head of the year,” signals the beginning of the High Holy Days. Yom Kippur, or Day of Atonement, marks the end, and together they are two of the holiest days for Jews. What You Need to Know: High Holy Days Services in Mendota Heights

The Beth Jacob Congregation will begin celebrating Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Sunday evening.

The High Holy Days—the annual ten-day stretch from Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, to Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, when Jews gather to reflect on the past year, pray for forgiveness for their transgressions and blow piercing, syncopated musical notes with modified ram's horns—begins Sunday evening. Beth Jacob Congregation, Mendota Heights's 400-household synagogue, is preparing to welcome the community to celebrate the High Holy Days at their temple. All services are free and babysitting and children's programming will be provided.
