Kensington Park in Mendota Heights Poised for New Playground

Mendota Heights City Council approved equipment purchase.

This fall, Kensington Park in southeast Mendota Heights will have new features for neighborhood families to discover. The Mendota Heights City Council approved the purchase of new playground equipment for the park at their July 19 meeting. The Parks and Recreation Commission spent months planning, discussing and gathering public sentiment regarding the makeover of Kensington.  The current equipment, installed in 1989, was identified for replacement due to outdated safety features, poor drainage, inaccessible surfacing, and peeling paint. Parks commissioners held public open houses, spoke to families and school children, and in June heard three initial proposals for equipment. When none of the bids met their expectations, they asked vendors…

Mendota Heights Inching Toward Kensington Playground Plan

Kensington plans hampered by limited resident input, funding setback.

Between a cold and rainy open house and the late spring, the Mendota Heights parks and recreation commission is still scrambling to garner ideas for the Kensington Park playground reconstruction. The commission also received a blow to the project budget. Originally, federal grant money earmarked for accessibility was going to be used for the playground surface. However, this application of the funds is not within the parameters of the grant.   The reduced budget steered commission members toward engineered wood fiber surfacing in lieu of rubber tile or poured rubber. “That’s $16,000 just in surface,” commission member Tom Krause said. The fiber, as the least expensive option, will still swallow up a large chunk of the $52,000 playground …

This may reduce your equipment costs substantially, allowing funds for the preferred upgrade to the playground surface. Rogers Lake Park has two sets of childrens playground equipment. Both sets appear to be in great condition and one set of playground equipment could be moved to Kengsington Park. Hope this helps, Kip   more ›

Mendota Heights Par 3 Golf Course Earnings Dip, Kensington Park Playground Project Ready for Citizens' Ideas

The Mendota Heights Parks and Recreation Commission stressed the need for community feedback at their March meeting.

Dreaming of green? So is the Mendota Heights Par 3 golf course, which incurred an operating loss last year while still maintaining a healthy budget balance. That was the message presented to the Mendota Heights Parks and Recreation Commission at their regular monthly meeting Tuesday. The panel also discussed a need for more public feedback on the Kensington Park playground project as it moves through the planning stages. Kensington Park is located in the southeast corner of the city between Mendota Heights Road and Interstate 494. Mary McGrory-Usset attended her first meeting as a Parks and Recreation Commissioner after being appointed by the city council in February. The Par 3 golf course’s annual report is scheduled to be reviewed by the…

Few mendota playgrounds have equipment suitable for toddlers (ages 1-3 or 4). Having part of the Kensington playground sized and safe for that age would be wonderful.   more ›

Dozens Apply for Mendota Heights Advisory Commissions

The city received the most applicants in recent memory, with residents volunteering to fill an unprecedented number of vacant commission seats.

Fifteen candidates have applied for seven open or opening seats on Mendota Heights’ advisory commissions. Candidates for three positions open on the planning commission and three positions open on the airport relations committee will be interviewed alongside candidates for a single vacant spot on the parks and recreation commission at a special meeting Feb. 16. "The city council will have a hard time making up their minds with so many qualified applicants," said City Administrator David McKnight, who has described both the number of vacancies and applicants as rare. The  council will vote to appoint applicants to all seven posts at their regular meeting on Tuesday, March 1. The three vacant seats on the planning commission are the result …
