Inver Grove Heights Artist Paints Rescue Dogs

Danette Malerich, an Inver Grove Heights artist, has taken up rescue dogs as her primary subject.

Inver Grove Heights artist Danette Malerich started painting dogs when a mother asked her to paint a portrait of her son's dog as a Christmas present. "Belle was my first dog portrait," Malerich told the Pioneer Press. "The woman wrote me a note later. She said that while her son is very introverted and doesn't show much emotion, when he opened the gift and saw the portrait, he started to cry. Malerich said she knows she's been successful when "the painting captures the spirit of the animal so much that people can feel it." Malerich told the Pioneer Press more about how she picks pooches to paint: Malerich prefers to meet the dogs she is commissioned to paint rather than working from photos. Man Arrested in Inver Grove Police Standoff Scheduled for Bail Hearing

Joseph John Gallahue was being held in the county jail on $150,000 bail Thursday night. Gallahue allegedly was holed up with a gun in an Inver Grove Heights home on Dec. 28. A SWAT team ended the standoff when it entered the home and apprehended Gallahue. Reports said police believed Gallahue possibly was suicidal during the standoff. UPDATED: Standoff With Armed IGH Man Ends in SWAT Team Arrest (AUDIO)

Update, 5:10 p.m.: About six hours after police first arrived at an Inver Grove Heights home, a standoff with an armed, possibly suicidal, man has been resolved, according to police scanner reports. Audio has been added to this article, courtesy of Police Clips.  A SWAT team entered the home on the 8000 block of Claymore Avenue East and detained the suspect, according to to police scanners. Update, 4:40 p.m.: As of 4:15 p.m. Friday, Inver Grove Heights Police were still involved in a standoff with an armed man at a home in Inver Grove Heights on the 8000 block of Claymore Avenue East. AMC Showplace Inver Grove To Beef Up Security After Colorado Shooting

Inver Grove Heights Police Chief Larry Stanger reiterated that there is no reason to hesitate if people's weekend plans includes a trip to the movies.

Mendota Heights area residents heading to the AMC Showplace Inver Grove movie theater this weekend are going to see a larger police presence this weekend after a University of Colorado-Denver graduate student opened fire in a crowded Aurora (Colo.) theater early Friday morning. According to early media reports, 24-year-old suspect James Egan Holmes allegedly used an AR-15 assault rifle, a shotgun and a .40-caliber handgun in an attack that has left 12 dead and 59 wounded. "The Inver Grove Heights police have been in touch with us (regarding the Colorado shooting)" AMC Showplace Inver Grove manager Eric Heskin told Patch.
