Thriller of a game completes a solid season for the Cadets
After two blowout victories in the quarter and semifinals of the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament, St Thomas Academy won the championship game Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center in thrilling fashion with a last minute goal, defeating the Hermantown Hawks 5 to 4. Sophomore forward Tom Novak scored a power play goal with 6.1 seconds remaining to put the Cadets on top for good, and the team won it's third straight State Class A championship. Matt Perry scored the first three Cadet goals for a hat trick, and Henry Hart scored to tie the score at 4 in the third period. David Zevnik made 19 saves in goal for the Cadets. The Mendota Heights-based school won 12-0 Wednesday at the 2013 state boys Class A hockey tournament.
It was an easy, and big, win for St. Thomas Academy during the quarterfinal round of the 2013 Minnesota state boys Class A hockey tournament. St. Thomas Academy won 12-0 over Saint Cloud Apollo High School Wednesday, March 6. Scoring for St. Thomas Academy, according to the Star Tribune’s Hockey Hub, was: Matt Perry with two, Alex Johnson with two, Austin Sattler, Wyatt Schmidt, Jake Geiser, Alec Broetzman with two, Henry Hart, Matt Perry and Peter Tutto. The St Thomas Academy Cadets, ranked No. 1 in class A Minnesota high school hockey during the regular season, were among the four teams to advance to the semifinals. The high school senior spoke to reporters on Wednesday, says God put her in the situation to help others.
"I believe God put me in this situation to help other people. And I believe he's going to get me out of it. I know it's going to happen soon." Those are the words Jenna Privette, a Lakeville native who suffered a serious spinal injury during a high school hockey game on Jan. 7, spoke to the Pioneer Press on Wednesday. In a pretty thorough interview, Jenna and her mom, Penny Rich-Privette, talked about life, the struggles the injury has caused, and her recovery. The good news: Penny told the Pioneer Press that "doctors are anticipating a full recovery." But Jenna's still paralyzed from the waist down and her recovery timetable is uncertain. Mendota Heights resident Kevin Ryan, senior VP of the company that owns the Chicago Blackhawks, took the silver vessel to a few local drinking holes Saturday night.
The Stanley Cup visited a few local hotspots Saturday night, due to a Mendota Heights man's affiliation with the Chicago Blackhawks NHL organization. Kevin Ryan is senior VP of Wirtz Beverage Minnesota, a beverage distribution company in Minnesota and Iowa. The Wirtz family also happens to own the 2010 Stanley Cup-winning Chicago Blackhawks. Ryan said he found out ten days ago when his day with the hallowed trophy would be. The company organized an employee function for Saturday afternoon to celebrate the arrival of the Cup. Former Blackhawks goalie and Hockey Hall of Famer Tony Esposito was onhand at the event to sign autographs. The St. Thomas Academy boy's hockey team fended off elimination with a 9-0 shutout over Simley.
The St. Thomas Academy boy's hockey team advanced in their playoff season with a 9-0 shutout over Simley Thursday night at Aldrich Arena. Matt Kroska and Alex Johnson each had one goal and three assists, while AJ Reid and Andrew Commers were the top goal scorers for the Cadets with two goals apiece. The Cadets team will next face off against Mahtomedi.
