Thriller of a game completes a solid season for the Cadets
After two blowout victories in the quarter and semifinals of the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament, St Thomas Academy won the championship game Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center in thrilling fashion with a last minute goal, defeating the Hermantown Hawks 5 to 4. Sophomore forward Tom Novak scored a power play goal with 6.1 seconds remaining to put the Cadets on top for good, and the team won it's third straight State Class A championship. Matt Perry scored the first three Cadet goals for a hat trick, and Henry Hart scored to tie the score at 4 in the third period. David Zevnik made 19 saves in goal for the Cadets. The St. Thomas Cadets destroyed the East Grand Forks Green Wave Friday afternoon 11-0 in the state tournament semifinals Friday afternoon at the Xcel Energy Center. They'll play for their third consecutive state title against Hermantown today at noon. The game was close for the first period, with St Thomas leading 2 -0 on goals by Dan McManus and Tom Novak. However, 32 seconds into the second period, Matt Perry scored the first of six second period Cadet goals and St Thomas dominated play from here on out. Wyatt Schmidt scored 4 goals, and Matt Perrry, Dan McManus and Gunnar Regan scored 2 apiece for the Cadets. St Thomas played its usual smothering defense, allowing just 14 shots on goal. The Mendota Heights-based school won 12-0 Wednesday at the 2013 state boys Class A hockey tournament.
It was an easy, and big, win for St. Thomas Academy during the quarterfinal round of the 2013 Minnesota state boys Class A hockey tournament. St. Thomas Academy won 12-0 over Saint Cloud Apollo High School Wednesday, March 6. Scoring for St. Thomas Academy, according to the Star Tribune’s Hockey Hub, was: Matt Perry with two, Alex Johnson with two, Austin Sattler, Wyatt Schmidt, Jake Geiser, Alec Broetzman with two, Henry Hart, Matt Perry and Peter Tutto. The St Thomas Academy Cadets, ranked No. 1 in class A Minnesota high school hockey during the regular season, were among the four teams to advance to the semifinals. June 1 event will benefit Special Olympics.
Registration is now open for the City of Mendota Heights' eghth annual 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 1, at the Village at Mendota Heights. The event is a fund raiser for the Special Olympics. Awards are given to the first three male and female winners in each age category: 19 and younger, 20-49 and 50 and older. The fee is $20 for those who register by 6 p.m. Friday, May 31. Day of race registration, open from 7 to 8:30 a.m., is $25.00. Registratoin includes a 5K t-shirt and race-day refreshments.
