Lucky’s 13's 'Saving 2nd Base 5K' Embraces 5th Year

The annual event with a cheeky name raises money for Susan G. Komen 3-Day teams.

will be again be giving the world’s leading breast cancer awareness organization a boost up this summer. For the fifth year in a row, Lucky’s 13 Pub in Mendota is hosting the "Saving 2nd Base 5K" to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

“It really began with (Lucky’s 13 owners) Linda Young and Charlie Burrows wanting to do something for the community,” said Lucky’s director of operations and self-described “Jack-of-all-trades,” Bonnie Reinke. “They see giving back as a priority. They knew that my family has been affected by breast cancer, and saw many of their customers were affected by it. They were moved to do something.”

This year’s Saving 2nd Base 5K takes place at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, June 30. The entry fee of $35 goes directly to members of the Lucky’s community who are raising funds for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day.

“The teams participating in the 3-Day walk have to raise thousands of dollars, and it’s nice to be able to support them as well as the breast cancer cause,” said Reinke.

The 5K is a run/walk that starts at Lucky’s and follows along the scenic . Fastest finishers receive cash prizes, and there are also door prizes and other giveaways the morning of the race. Participants who are of drinking age will also receive a free drink ticket. Previous years’ races have had up to 200 runners and walkers.

As part of the event, Lucky’s also holds a Design-A-Bra contest. Creative folks can submit their entries at check-in; 5K participants vote for their favorite, and gift certificates are awarded to the winners. Last year’s winner was a bra covered in tater tots, one of Lucky’s signature items.

Teri Skadron of West St. Paul participated in the race last year with her son, then 11 years old.

“It was the perfect family-friendly event. I can’t wait to take my younger kids this year,” said Skadron. “It’s also a beautiful route. I’ve run other races in the past and I can really appreciate the beauty of this one.”

Reinke agrees that despite the cheeky name, the race is family-friendly.

“This event is a lot of fun. We have all kinds of people do the 5K. We have serious runners, but we also have families with strollers and folks of all shapes, sizes and ages,” Reinke explained. “The sense of community is clear. When you come to the race, you’ll see a lot of hugging.”

It’s this sense of family that drives the event sponsors, Lucky’s 13 locations in Mendota and Bloomington, Me & Julio in Hastings, and Rudy’s Redeye Grill in Rosemount.

“We’re a business that is all about relationships and friendships,” said Reinke. “We want to show we are grateful by paying it forward.”

Runners and walkers can register for the Saving 2nd Base 5K in person at Lucky’s 13 Pub, or online at Active.com.
