Mendota Heights Bench Donation Program Provides a Rest, Remembrance

Residents can donate a park bench to the city to honor or remember a friend or loved one.

Mendota Heights parks and trails recently gained a new spot to relax through the city’s bench donation program.

The city’s most recent bench donor is Elizabeth Moran, who organized the donation in memory of her friend Michael Reiling.

A longtime Mendota Heights resident, Reiling was diagnosed with lung cancer in December and died unexpectedly in January.

“This seemed like a very good way to help all of us process what had happened,” said Moran.

The bench donation program has existed since 2001, and there are approximately 10 donated benches placed in and along city parks and trails. The benches can be donated in honor or memory of the donor(s) themselves, a friend or a loved one.

“People wanted to be able to help make the parks better,” said Jake Sedlacek, assistant to the city administrator.

The cost to donate a bench is $750, which covers the bench and a dedication plaque. Installation costs and the cost of the concrete bench foundation pad are paid by the city.

Anyone interesting in donating must apply, although donors are able to choose the location of the bench.

Moran applied for the donation in February and her application was approved by the city council in April.

The bench is scheduled to be installed in the next few weeks and will be placed in , which Reiling lived adjacent to for many years.
