The West St. Paul/Mendota Heights American Legion baseball team split a pair of games with Woodbury Blue on Monday at
The Challenger baseball team defeated Woodbury Blue 4-3 in the first game of the day, then fell 15-5 in Game 2. The split gives West St. Paul a 22-11 record on the season.
In the first game, pitcher Kevin Gust led the way for the Challengers by pitching 6 2/3 innings and allowing seven hits and three runs—one earned—while striking out two. Billy Jacobson picked up the save by pitching the final out with a strikeout.

At the plate, Teddy Andrews, John Gould, Zach Gottfredsen, Dominic Mascia and Doug Vanasek each picked up hits. Gottfredsen, Vanasek, Jack Miller and Michael Mansur each drove in runs.
In the second game, Woodbury scored eight runs in the first and six runs in the second to pull away early. The Challengers tried to mount a comeback with three runs in the fourth, but the lead was too much to overcome.

Gottfredsen, Spencer Brooks and Tyler Pease each had two hits for the home team in the second game. Houston Droel went 0-for-2 with two RBIs.
The Challenger team’s next game is Tuesday at 6 p.m. at St. Paul Park.
