West St. Paul/Mendota Heights Challengers Get Forfeit Win in Regular Season Finale

Visiting Inver Grove Heights team beats the Challengers 5-4 in a steamy drama Sunday morning, but forfeits due to an ineligible player.

Inver Grove Heights won one on the field Sunday morning but lost one in the scoreboard in American Legion baseball at Henry Sibley High School.

Inver Grove Heights beat the West St. Paul/Mendota Heights Challenger baseball team 5-4 Sunday morning, but the game was recorded as a 10-0 forfeit for West St. Paul because of the use of an ineligible player.

Inver Grove Heights came into the contest shorthanded and played with no reserves.

"They used an illegal player," said West St. Paul coach Seth Pugh.

The second game of the planned doubleheader was canceled because of Sunday's excessive heat.

On the field, Alex LaShomb hit a home run in the seventh inning to lead Inver Grove Heights.

The team also got a circus catch from centerfielder Logan Busch to end the game. Leading by a run with two out and the bases loaded, West St. Paul batter Houston Droel sent a long fly ball to center field that Busch caught at the fence, then tumbled over, but held onto the ball for the final out.

Inver Grove Heights finished the regular season at 2-13.

West St. Paul/Mendota Heights (28-12) also wrapped up the regular season and now plays Forest Lake at Red Wing at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the first round of the American Legion state playoffs.
