Sports Roundup: Warriors Football Falls Again, Cadets Soccer Loses In Playoffs

Henry Sibley drops to 1-6 on the gridiron; local soccer squads all eliminated from postseason.

Last week was rough to Mendota Heights sports teams, punctuated by another loss for Henry Sibley football and the mass exodus of area soccer squads from the sectional playoffs.

Henry Sibley Football

The football team dropped to 1-6 on the season with a 33-7 loss at North St. Paul on Oct. 14.

Dante Grant's touchdown pass to Nick Golberg, combined with Zach Haas' extra-point kick actually gave the Warriors a 7-6 lead in the first quarter, but the Polars posted the next 27 points to turn the game into a rout.

Henry Sibley concludes the regular season at home against on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

St. Thomas Soccer

The fifth-seeded St. Thomas Academy boys soccer team made it three rounds before succumbing in the Section 3A Tournament.

After topping No. 12 Hmong Academy and No. 4 Trinity School, the Cadets fell 2-1 to No. 1 St. Paul Academy to close out 2011 with a 10-8-1 record.

Benjamin Lemay led STA with 20 goals this season.

Henry Sibley Soccer

The Henry Sibley soccer teams were both eliminated in the opening round of their Section 3AA Tournament brackets on Oct. 11.

Eastview defeated the Warriors girls by a 5-1 score, with Apple Valley beating the boys 4-0 to end both squad's 2011 campaigns.

The girls finished with a 5-8-4 record, the boys were 10-5 this year. Individual statistics were not made available.

Visitation Soccer

The Visitation girls soccer team was defeated in a shootout at Minnehaha Academy in its Section 3A Tournament quarterfinal round on Oct. 13 after the Blazers had topped Bethany Academy 7-0 two days earlier.

Visitation wrapped up its season with a 12-6 record. Abby O'Brien and Haley Housh led the Blazers with 15 and 13 goals, respectively.

Henry Sibley Volleyball

A 2-2 appearance in the Centennial Tournament on Saturday broke a four-match losing streak for the Henry Sibley volleyball team.

The Warriors, 12-15 overall and 6-8 in the Classic Suburban Conference, concluded the regular season with a 3-0 win at home against South St. Paul on Monday night.

Visitation Volleyball

Visitation topped Brooklyn Center and St. Croix Lutheran by the same 3-0 score last week to improve to 20-6 overall.

The Blazers have locked up the Tri-Metro Conference championship with an 11-0 circuit record and closed out the regular season at home against non-conference opponent Providence Academy on Tuesday night.
