Sports Roundup: Mendota Heights Teams Enter Heart Of Fall Sports Season

Henry Sibley, St. Thomas Academy and Visitation all competed in a full slate of post-Labor Day contests last week.

Mendota Heights athletic teams returned to competition following the Labor Day holiday, playing a full schedule against opponents over the first week of school.

Visitation Volleyball

Five consecutive match wins without a single game loss gave the volleyball team the championship of its own tournament last Saturday and improved the Blazers to 6-2 on the season.

Visitation, who topped St. Agnes in three games to open its Tri-Metro Conference season last Wednesday, defeated Holy Angels, South St. Paul, Mora, New Life Academy and Mora to build a sudden six-match winning streak.

Against the Aggies, Lauren Debertin, Mackenzie Gutzner and Annie Debertin tied for the team lead with five kills apiece, while Kayla Adducci's 24 assists and six digs topped the squad.

St. Thomas Academy Cross-Country

The cross-country team finished seventh in the Ron Kretsch Invitational at Bassett Creek Park in Crystal on Saturday.

William Fenelon placed 24th in 11 minutes, 5 seconds to lead the Cadets. He was followed by Joe McGraw (11:07) in 28th, Henry Dalsin (11:31) in 46th, Jack Ryan (11:33) in 49th and Peter Farley (11:36) in 55th.

Visitation Girls Soccer

Back-to-back victories last week kept the Visitation girls soccer team, ranked seventh in Class A, undefeated with a 6-0 record heading into this week.

The Blazers topped St. Croix Lutheran, 5-1, last Tuesday and then defeated Providence Academy, 4-2, on Thursday.

Abby O'Brien leads the squad with six goals, followed by Sarah Neuberger with three scores.

Visitation Cross-Country

The Visitation girls cross-country team took second at the Kretsch Invite on Saturday.

Martha Hubbell finished second individually with a time of 8:45, followed by Marta Seitz (9:19) in 15th, Grace Foster (9:35) in 27th, Susan Nitschke (9:36) in 28th and Katie Gavic (9:37) in 30th. 

Henry Sibley Boys Soccer

A 6-2 defeat of Richfield on Thursday followed a 3-1 loss to Mahtomedi two days earlier as the Henry Sibley boys soccer team split against a pair of Classic Suburban Conference rivals last week to bring its record to 4-1 this season. Individual statistics were not made available.

Henry Sibley Girls Soccer

The girls soccer team went 1-1-1 last week to bring its record to 2-2-3 as the Warriors tied North St. Paul (1-1) on Tuesday, beat Richfield (7-0) on Thursday and lost at Rosemount (5-1) on Saturday. Individual statistics were not made available.

Henry Sibley Volleyball

A three-game sweep at the hands of Tartan last Thursday dropped the Henry Sibley volleyball team to 2-1 on the season. Individual statistics were not made available.

Henry Sibley Girls Tennis

The Henry Sibley girls tennis team fell to 2-6 after losing all three of its matches at the Rosemount Tournament last Saturday, losing to the hosts, Orono and Cannon Falls. Individual statistics were not made available.

Henry Sibley Girls Swimming and Diving

A score of 226 points earned the Henry Sibley girls swimming and diving team a third-place finish in the Packer Invite in South St. Paul on Saturday. Individual statistics were not made available.

St. Thomas Academy Boys Soccer

The STA boys soccer team went 1-2 last week with a 2-1 defeat of Simley sandwiched by losses to visiting North St. Paul and St. Paul Academy. Individual statistics were not made available. The Cadets head into this week with a 3-3-1 record.

Visitation Girls Tennis

The Visitation girls tennis team swept its own invitational meet last Saturday, defeating Minneapolis South (4-3), Simley (5-2) and St. Paul Harding (7-0) to improve to 6-2 on the season. Individual statistics were not made available.
