SPORTS ROUNDUP: Several Henry Sibley Teams Open Winter Seasons

The Warriors girls hockey team has played five games so far, but the boys basketball, girls basketball, gymnastics, boys hockey and wrestling teams are in action for the first time this week.

Here is a look at recent action by Henry Sibley varsity teams:

BOYS BASKETBALL
The Henry Sibley boys basketball team opens its season Friday with a game at Chanhassen. Its first home game is against Orono on Dec. 11.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
The Sibley girls basketball team takes an 0-1 record into this weekend’s home tournament. The Warriors face Hastings at 7:30 p.m. Friday and East Ridge at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Sibley lost to Park, 74-20, on Tuesday.

GYMNASTICS
The Sibley gymnastics team will open the year at the Simley Invitational on Saturday. Its first home meet is against Tartan on Dec. 13.

BOYS HOCKEY
The Sibley boys hockey team was nipped, 6-5, by Spring Lake Park in a back-and-forth battle Thursday night.

The first two times Spring Lake Park took two-goal leads, the Warriors struck back and tied the score. But in this game, the third time wasn’t the charm, as Sibley could only close the score to 6-5 late in the third period.

Jack Coleman led the Warriors with two goals. Also netting goals were Ben Sather, Steve Malmgren and Austin Westman.

Henry Sibley will visit St. Paul Johnson on Saturday.

GIRLS HOCKEY
The Sibley girls hockey team will take a four-game winning streak into its game at Irondale on Saturday. After losing their opener to St. Paul United, the Warriors have defeated Minneapolis, 4-1; Detroit Lakes, 5-1; Fergus Falls, 3-2, and St. Paul Blades, 3-2.

In Tuesday’s win over St. Paul Blades, Sibley trailed 2-0 before scoring two goals in the second period and the game-winner in the third period. Scoring goals for the Warriors were Elizabeth Fiddler, Erika Hillstrom and Alexa Wild.

WRESTLING
The Sibley wrestling team will open its season at the Lakeville North Invitational on Saturday.
