Mendota Heights Sports Roundup: Fall Sports Begin

Henry Sibley, St. Thomas Academy and Visitation all commenced 2011 athletic campaigns last week.

The fall sports season began last week for a number of local squads from , and , with even more teams set to start their 2011 campaigns in the upcoming days.

St. Thomas Academy Boys Soccer

A 2-0 victory against Fridley last Thursday got the St. Thomas Academy boys soccer team's season off on the right foot.

Benjamin Lemay and Louis Holtz both scored for the Cadets in the win, with goalkeeper Matthew Schatz making three saves for the shutout triumph.

They followed up with a 2-1 win against St. Cloud Cathedral on Saturday.

STA returns to play on Tuesday at Classic Suburban Conference foe South St. Paul in a 5 p.m. matchup; the Cadets remain on the road for a non-conference game at Holy Family Catholic in Waconia at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Henry Sibley Boys Soccer

With back-to-back wins in the Irondale Tournament, the Henry Sibley boys soccer team began the season in triumphant manner by topping both the host Knights and St. Michael-Albertville in games last Thursday and Saturday, respectively.

The Warriors shutout Irondale, 4-0, in the season opener, then defeated STMA by a 3-1 count to claim the tourney title and enter conference play this week with a 2-0 record.

Individual statistics were not available. Sibley is scheduled to host Mahtomedi at 7 p.m. Thursday in its lone game this week.

Henry Sibley Girls Soccer

Henry Sibley girls soccer squad was not so fortunate last week, going scoreless in a 3-0 loss to visiting Hastings last Thursday.

The Warriors are set to play at St. Paul Como Park at 5 p.m. Tuesday, then host Simley at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Henry Sibley Girls Tennis

The Henry Sibley girls tennis team opened the year with a pair of setbacks, losing 6-1 to Roseville and 7-0 to Prior Lake last Monday and Wednesday, respectively. Individual statistics were not available. 

Visitation Girls Tennis

The Visitation girls tennis team got off to a great start with a 4-3 win over Hopkins last Tuesday. 

Individual statistics were not available. The Blazers host St. Paul Academy at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Visitation Girls Soccer

A 2-1 win at St. Paul Central last Friday began the Visitation girls soccer team's season off to a winning start.

Individual statistics were not available. The Blazers have a full second week with games at Trinity School and Mounds Park Academy on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, before returning home to play Tri-Metro Conference opponent St. Agnes at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
