St. Thomas Academy Athletic Director Jack Zahr Suffers Stroke

The Minnesota State High School League released information via Facebook Tuesday about the longtime leader of Cadet sports. A family CaringBridge account said Zahr will not recover from the effects of the stroke.

Jack Zahr, athletic director at St. Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights, suffereda severe stroke Sunday, Sept. 1 in his home. He has been transferred to “comfort care” this week, and is not expected to recover from the effects of the incident, according to a family Caring Bridge account.

The Minnesota State High School League released the information Tuesday, Sept. 3 via its Facebook account. Zahr has been instrumental in building strong athletic programs at STA, racking up multiple championships in boys’ hockey and football along the way.

The academy is in the midst of building a new activities center, a project which Zahr was firmly behind, to be unveiled next year. A groundbreaking ceremony for that project, which will be named after trustee Vince Flynn, is set for early October.

Zahr is married to Jan, and the couple has two daughters – Laura and Becky.
