Late Goal Kills Edina's State Title Hopes

The Hornets fell 3-2 to the Benilde-St. Margaret's Red Knights in a quarterfinal matchup.

With 23.9 seconds left in the third period, the Edina boys hockey team's hopes of advancing in the 2012 state tournament evaporated on the ice.

A clutch goal by Benilde-St. Margaret's Christian Horn made it 3-2 late in regulation play, effectively killing the Hornets' chances of taking the hard-fought game to overtime.

"It's always tough to see it happen, especially when it happens to you," Edina Coach Curt Giles said of the late goal.

The Hornets were tied 0-0 with BSM headed into the second period, with plenty of physical play early in the game.

Grant Besse kicked off scoring for the evening, on a power play goal with 13:49 left in the second period. Edina's Connor Hurley evened things up to 1-1 with 3:19 remaining in the second with a power play goal of his own.

Only 17 seconds into the third period, Benilde-St. Margaret's Daniel Labosky snuck one into the net to make it 2-1. A mere 19 seconds later, Andy Jordahl scored another for Edina to knot it up at 2-2. Horn's final goal with 23.9 seconds remaining finally secured the win for the Red Knights.

Edina goalie Willie Benjamin had a strong performance throughtout the game, keeping the Hornets in the contest with 23 saves.

"Without him, we're not in that game tonight," Edina captain Nick Leer said at a press conference following the loss.

Benilde goalie Justin Quale also came up big for the Red Knights, making a number of sprawling saves while Edina outshot BSM, 35 to 26. He had 33 saves on the night.

The Hornets head to the consolation bracket to face Duluth East at noon on Friday, Mar. 9, at Mariucci Arena. The Red Knights will face Lakeville South at 8 p.m. tomorrow in the semifinals.

It wasn't a good day to be a seeded team in AA action, with all four falling to their unseeded opponents. Eagan and Maple Grove also fell in their quarterfinal matchups.
