District 197 Chalk Talk: Ad Contract Troubles, BlueSky Debate Continue

The Aug. 15 meeting of the District 197 School Board, in brief.

New interim superintendent Tom Nelson provided a review of how the most recent education bill passed by the Minnesota Legislature will affect District 197. Nelson said although the Legislature did not provide districts with significant , a number of repealed mandates have provided more flexibility.

  • Board Chair Robin Rainford announced she is withdrawing from the school board elections to pursue a business opportunity in Europe.
  • The contract with has raised general concern with board members. Nelson said that it's unlikely a contract can be executed before the start of the school year, and suggested that a committee be formed to review options. Nelson said his research into the experiences of the St. Francis School District turned up positive reviews consistent with those reported in the Becker School District, but he was uncomfortable moving forward with something he has not yet seen, and under the terms being presented by School Media, Inc.
  • Communications Director Susan Brott reported on the levy initiative. The District 197 levy request and the four board positions will be the only items on the ballot for district voters in November. Brott outlined a schedule of communications planned including regular district updates, information posted online and public meetings to be scheduled this fall.
  • Nelson said he was unsure whether board members leading the should vote, if the committee decide to formulate positions through voting. Board member and SRAC leader Cristina Gillette said that having board members on an advisory committee is problematic. Board member and SRAC leader Mark Spurr said operating as an ex-officio member in the case of a vote would be appropriate.
  • Whether the district should take on saving the in West St. Paul was discussed. Board members and Nelson said while the opportunity has potential, it is unclear how the acquisition would benefit the district.
