The cold weather has claimed another school day.

The Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School District has canceled classes for Monday, Jan. 27. The following message is on the district's website:

School is canceled Monday, January 27 due to concern about students walking to school and waiting at bus stops in the extreme cold and high winds. Buses are more prone to breakdowns and delays in the extreme cold, and children with exposed skin can be frostbitten in as little as five to 10 minutes.

District leaders are concerned about the instructional time that students have lost as a result of recent cancelations and are considering options for possibly adding school days. If school days are added, the decision would be communicated to parents well in advance of the added days.

Superintendent Jane Berenz wrote a message on Friday, alerting parents to the possibility of school cancellations on Monday and Tuesday, due to the dangerously cold temperatures.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning from 12 a.m. on Monday until 12 p.m. on Tuesday. Temperatures on Monday are forecast to be 15 to 25 below. Wind chills could be 35 to 50 below.
