Dist. 197 Compost Sale Returns

The West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan School District turns their lunchroom scraps into gardening gold.

is offering up compost by the bucket this weekend, the rich reward of their lunchroom compost and recycling program.

This will be the second year of the compost sale at . Bring your own bag, bucket or tarp-lined trunk and spend $2 for a 5-gallon bucket, or $5 for 15 gallons (three buckets).

“We are so excited to be able to offer compost again this spring for our community,” said Lisa Johnson, the district’s sustainability manager, in a statement. “Since the compost is from our own lunchrooms, this is really bringing our recycling efforts full circle.”

Lunch waste from school cafeterias is brought to The Mulch Store, where it is processed into the nutrient-rich compost.

Students from Henry Sibley will be on hand west of the track to help load compost from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 21 and 28, May 4, 5, 12 and 19.
