District 197 Points of Pride: Academics & Activities and Community Involvement

The 2012-13 school year was full of accomplishments throughout District 197 — West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan Area Schools. Thanks to the students, staff and community members who helped make 2012-13 great!  
 
ACADEMICS & ACTIVITIES  

Fourth graders at Garlough helped document Minnesota’s dragonfly and damselfly population for a first-of-its-kind statewide identification survey: http://bit.ly/QhmJ5s  

Sibley 9th grade students Kaelyn Johnson, Emi Almanza Lopez and Christina Zaine were featured in the national PBS science television show, “SciGirls”.  

Forty-eight Henry Sibley students earned Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar Awards recognition: http://bit.ly/RcQC5p 

Three teams of Friendly Hills 7th and 8th graders competed in the 2013 Future Cities Competition, all of them placing within the top 10: http://bit.ly/WwN2Lm

Six Henry Sibley seniors were named National Merit Commended Students: Christine Egan, Ellen Kinney, Benjamin Sather, Aaron Thomas, Brianna Wilde, Joshua Brinkman.  

Eighth grader Nick Crary was the Friendly Hills 2013 Geography Bee champion.

Heritage 6th graders Bryson Halsey, Logan Finkel, Aiden Jacobs and Peter Dean Mckenzie competed at the Minnesota FIRST® LEGO® League State Tournament.  

Six Garlough students participated in the 2012 U of M Odonata (Dragonflies and Damselflies) Insect Fair and received an "Outstanding Display" award.  

Nearly 50 students showcased their work during the 2013 Mendota Project Fair in February.  

Eight members of the Henry Sibley Math Team participated in the State Tournament: Mark Dosh, LilyAnn Gapinski, Connor O'Leary, Bin Guo, Isaac Cortes, Kellen Overvig, Sarah Yotter and Adrian Rocke.  

In March, Pilot Knob students read more than 5 million words, far surpassing their goal of 3 million.  

Odyssey of the Mind teams from Somerset and Garlough qualified for the OM World Finals.  

Sylvia Taylor
was the 2013 Geography Bee Champion at Mendota Elementary.

Friendly Hills' Anna Dupont was the 2012 District Spelling Bee winner and went on to compete in the regional and seven county metro tournaments.  

The Friendly Hills 6th and 7th grade Chess Team of Thomas Miranda, Magnus Nordby and Anton Priborkin won the State 7th Grade Chess Championship.

Sixty juniors and seniors from Henry Sibley participated in the West St. Paul - Mendota Heights Rotary Club Ethics Workshop.


COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT  

Somerset Elementary raised nearly $7,000 for the American Heart Association during their Jump Rope for Heart event: http://bit.ly/11L04aH  

In November, Mendota Elementary students collected 85 bags of groceries to donate to Neighbors, Inc.  

Pilot Knob students collected more than 100 lbs. of food to donate to Project Pantry as part of World Kindness Week.  

The Sibley ALMAS group was recognized as Emerging Leaders by the Saint Paul Area Council of Churches (SPACC). Their advisor Rob Hanson was recognized with a Local Legend Award: http://bit.ly/WdhUxP 

The Friendly Hills Student Council collect 227 pairs of used and new shoes for the charity Soles4Souls, Inc. — 103 more pairs than last year.  

Henry Sibley students raised more than $30,000 for charities during their annual GOFA (Give Once For All) week: http://bit.ly/16NmfwB  

Last fall Heritage students delivered 1,172 non-perishable food items to Neighbors, Inc.  

More than 275 people participated in the Warrior 5K hosted by the ISD 197 Education Foundation with help from the Henry Sibley Student Council. 

Mendota Elementary 4th graders combined service learning with healthy choices by donating their Halloween candy to troops overseas: http://bit.ly/QPZvHL  

Sibley students packed approximately 116,000 meals during GOFA Week 2013.

Somerset Elementary collected 1,145 pounds of food — almost 1,000 meals — for Neighbors, Inc.

Led by the student council, Heritage raised more than $800 in their Pennies for Patients fundraiser for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Moreland Arts and Health Sciences Magnet School students collected more than 1,000 pounds of donations during their Food Drive.
