Rogers Lake Assoc. Asks to Allow Electric Motors

Should Mendota Heights allow boats powered by electric motors on south Rogers Lake?

Should the city of Mendota Heights allow boats powered by electric motors on south ? How about other water bodies in town?

These are questions being raised by the , which has filed a petition with the city to allow electric-powered boats on Rogers Lake south of Wagon Wheel Trail.

"We’re patient and ready to work with you," said Rogers Lake resident Tim Carlson, who addressed the Mendota Heights City Council last week.

The request could open up a series of inquiries for city staff. For example, proliferation of docks, which are managed by the DNR, or a public boat launch would further develop the shoreline.

“Once you do this, it’s going to be a different lake,” said Mayor Sandra Krebsbach at the meeting.

Rogers Lake south is the largest body of water in town. Bodies of water including Lemay Lake and Augusta Lake come in second and third, respectively, in terms of acreage, but are more shallow.

"Rogers is clearly unique, in the fact that it can be used for recreation," Jake Sedlacek, assistant to the city administrator, told Patch in an email.

Carlson said of 17 property owners, 12 have signed on to the petition, and three could not be reached at the time of the meeting.

City council members said they were open to learning more, but the request will likely take time to vet.
