Redistricting of Mendota Heights Area Questioned

The courts will end up making the decisions, said legislators.

The GOP redistricting plan in the Minnesota House of Representatives was released last week, followed by the Senate's released today.

The House bill, HF1425, passed last week along a party line vote, but it's unlikely that the proposals will get past the governor, said legislators.

Redistricting is a process taken on every ten years to rebalance the boundaries of local, state and national representation after the results of official Census data are released. This year's redistricting effort would be in place for the primaries of 2012.

The new Senate and House maps submitted are largely the same. Both plans have northern Dakota County renumbered as District 50. Mendota Heights, Mendota, Lilydale, Sunfish Lake, most of Inver Grove Heights and the top slice of Eagan are defined as 50A, while West St. Paul, South St. Paul and the northern portion of Inver Grove Heights join together as 50B.

On the congressional level, Mendota Heights, Mendota and Lilydale stay in the fourth district, represented by Betty McCollum. To see the congressional districts in Google Maps, click here.

"At the end of the day the courts will decide," said Sen. Jim Metzen (D-District 39). Metzen said the process did not include Democrats, and the governor won't sign a bill without bipartisan support. The plan "creates some pretty strong Republican suburban districts," said Metzen.

Rep. Rick Hansen (D-District 39A) said the plan did not receive enough input out in the communities before being passed. The bill received one contentious hearing in the House Redistricting Committee last Tuesday.  An amended version of the House plan was submitted the day of the floor vote.

"The way Dakota County is carved up its a bit odd," said Hansen. He said the boundaries don't reflect transportation and community corridors.
