Metzen, Hansen Split on Whether to Accept July Pay

Metzen said it's not fair to receive pay, while Hansen said he's working for the money.

The question of which legislators accepted their July paychecks has become a hot topic among voters since the state government shut down July 1.

Sen. Jim Metzen (D-District 39) declined his paycheck. Rep. Rick Hansen (D-District 39A) accepted his.

“I don’t think it’s fair for us to take a salary when all those other people are on furlough,” said Metzen. “I guess we all have to take the blame for this thing not getting done.”

Hansen said that he’s trying to earn his July paycheck, whether the agencies are operating or not.

“I’m still working. I’m working,” said Hansen on Wednesday. “I’m here (at his office in the state government building) trying to respond to constituents and trying to solve problems. And unlike those employees in layoff status, I’m still here.”

Hansen also said that while he was at his farm this weekend and on Tuesday, he was in contact with other legislators and state officials regarding vandalism reported at state parks and weather damage in the Camden area.

Legislators are paid once a month, and earn $31,140 per year, according to the Minnesota State Legislature website.

Both Mendota Heights legislators have sworn off any per diem payments should a special session be called.
