Mendota Heights Clean-Up Day Adds Electronics, Household Hazardous Waste Collection

2012's event will be a week earlier, and a whole lot bigger with the help of a Dakota County partnership.

Editor's Note: Dakota County Commissioner Tom Egan represents Mendota Heights, Lilydale, Mendota and a portion of Eagan. He was elected to office in 2004 and is now serving his second four-year term. Egan will write regularly to Patch readers about county government.

Mendota Heights, Mendota and Lilydale benefit greatly from their proximity to the in Eagan.

The Recycling Zone provides a one-stop shop for residents to drop-off unwanted electronics, fluorescent lightbulbs, fertilizers, paint and more.

Additionally, I am pleased to report that Mendota Heights will be partnering with Dakota County for their annual Spring Clean-Up Day and will collect household hazardous waste for the first time.

The event will be held at on Dodd Road south of Highway 110 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 28.

The event will collect electronics such as televisions and computers and, for the first time, this collection event will collect small household electronics such as vacuum cleaners and coffee makers, all at no charge.

Since Mendota Heights typically collects electronics at its clean-up day, Dakota County staff recommended to the county board that electronic collection be included as part of this event to provide consistency for residents.

Those items not accepted for the event include all business electronics, and the following household electronics: curling irons, straighteners, “white goods” such as refrigerators, dish washers, stoves, etc.

Dakota County will provide equipment, staff, publicity outside the city area and coordination and reimbursement of the disposal contractor. The county will be responsible for collection and sorting of waste and electronics and will also provide personal safety equipment.

Mendota Heights will provide the site, local publicity, staffing for the collection and management of the solid wastes and recyclables received.

In addition to the event being held in Mendota Heights, the Dakota County Board of Commissioners also approved collection events to be held this year in the cities of Lakeville, Burnsville and Farmington.

The estimated county cost for the Mendota Heights event will be $25,000, which is included in the County's 2012 Environmental Management budget.

The Dakota County Board always appreciates the opportunity to collaborate with our local communities on events such as this.
