Civic Center Field Renamed Mertensotto Field

A naming ceremony Sunday afternoon honored the former mayor of Mendota Heights.

The former off of Lexington Avenue and Highway 110 was on Sunday in a ceremony honoring the longtime mayor Charles (Chuck) Mertensotto. 

Mertensotto served eight consecutive terms as mayor, preceeded by 14 years on the city council.  at the age of 83. 

Mayor Sandra Krebsbach described Mertensotto as a committed public servant "who always put the good of the city first."

The field is designed for 12- to 13-year-old baseball and is used regularly by surrounding schools and the Mendota Heights Athletic Association. 

Council members Ultan Duggan and Liz Petschel also spoke at the event.

Duggan he had written for Mertensotto when he retired, and Petschel remarked that when the subject of a dedication arose, some recalled conversations promising that the ballfield at City Hall would be named in Mertensotto's honor some day. 

Mertensotto oversaw the construction of City Hall during his time in office. 

"It is an honor to name this field in Mayor Mertensotto's honor, and to share the moment with his family, children, (their) spouses and grandchildren," said Krebsbach.
