Mendota Heights and West St. Paul Mayors Present 'State of the Cities'

In a joint presentation with West St. Paul Mayor John Zanmiller, Mendota Heights Mayor Sandra Krebsbach outlined a picture of the city's economic development.

Mendota Heights’ best opportunities for growth are in the industrial and commercial sector, said Mayor Sandra Krebsbach at a State of the Cities address hosted by the Dakota County Regional Chamber of Commerce Thursday morning.

West St. Paul Mayor John Zanmiller presented the economic development activity of his community as well, emphasizing the role of partnerships in keeping the city’s costs down.

Krebsbach described the theme of the upcoming year as “Securing the Future.” Goals for the city this year will be to establish a rental property ordinance, commercial maintenance standards, and additional business in the industrial and business parks.

The city’s economic health has been somewhat sheltered from the worst of the economic downturn. Building permits were up in 2010 compared to 2009. Krebsbach said the city has been “fortunate” with respect to foreclosures, which thus far have not been as prevalent as in other communities.

In addition, the municipal Par 3 golf course continues to cover its operating costs.

Notable in 2010, Krebsbach cited completion of the $1.4 million project to refurbish the water tower, dedication of the Pilot Knob overlook and the groundbreaking at Mendota Plaza.

Attracting new corporate headquarters is a long-term goal, said Krebsbach. She explained after the presentation that the city can increase communication with existing businesses and possibly marketing to achieve that goal in the future.
