Letter to the Editor: Dakota County Commissioner Reflects on Accomplishments

To help voters, Dakota County Commissioner Tom Egan also reviews the changes coming to voting precincts in Eagan.

To the editor:

It has been a great honor and I am thankful for the opportunity to have served the residents of Dakota County in District Three for the last eight years.  I have had the privilege of serving as chair of the board during one and vice chair during two of those years. I look forward to serving the residents of District Three with equal enthusiasm for the next four years.

Dakota is a great County and the Dakota County Board has worked hard to keep it that way.  Dakota County has the lowest per-capita tax levy of all metropolitan area counties and the third lowest in the entire state.  We have set as a board goal to never stop looking for ways to perform the many services Dakota County is required to perform as efficiently and effectively as possible.

While being frugal, we are listening carefully to the desires of our residents.  We are currently working to update the park system master plan for Lebanon Hills Regional Park in Eagan—the flagship of the Dakota County regional park system.  We are undertaking the first phase development of our brand new 460-acre Whitetail Woods Regional Park in Empire Township.  We are continuously working to update and improve Dakota County's nine libraries.  We continue to strive for the safest and highest quality county transportation system possible.  We will be opening the Cedar Avenue Bus Rapid Transit System for business by the spring of next year.  We are working on all options to relieve congestion on the Robert Street corridor.  All of this has been very challenging especially during these terribly difficult financial times.

I sincerely appreciate the privilege and look forward to the opportunity to serve the residents of the third district for the next four years. I ask those of you who live in the southern and central part of Eagan to take note of certain changes in the make up of the county districts in Eagan. This summer, each registered voter in Dakota County received a postcard entitled "redistricting notice to voters". Among other things, this notice tells you what county district you are in.  There have been certain changes in Districts Three and Four. If you live in what is now precincts 8, 15 or 17, you are now in District Four. If you now live in precincts 6b. 9a, 9b, 10, 11 or 12 you are now in district three. Please make note of these changes.

While through redistricting I regret losing some of my Eagan constituents, I am grateful to now be representing other old friends that I have not represented since my days as Eagan's mayor.

Thomas A. Egan
Dakota County Board, Third District
