Viewfinder: Snow Falls and Water Rises in Fort Snelling State Park and Lilydale Regional Park

Both Parks now closed as the trails running along the river banks face their annual reunion with flood waters.

It takes a 14-foot rise in water levels for Lilydale Regional Park to begin to be submerged by the rising flood waters of the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers. The Mississippi River's height is hovering just below 13 feet as of 1:15 p.m. Thursday, March 24.

Lilydale Regional Park, Fort Snelling State Park and Lilydale Road off of Sibley Memorial Highway are closed while the volume of melted snow swells the river beyond its banks.

Lilydale Regional Park, east of I-35E, and Fort Snelling State Park, behind the , are relatively undeveloped due to their location on the flood plain, which reduces the expensive damage caused by the flooding of private property.
