Mendota Heights Skate Park Users Ask for Repairs, Additions

The park at Rogers Lake needs some TLC, and two users of the skate park said they're willing to help.

Rather than spending the warm evening outdoors, two users of the attended Tuesday’s parks and recreation commission meeting to raise the idea of improvements to the space.

Peeling surface on the primary halfpipe and asphalt cracks and fissures need repair to keep the area safe, according to Jake Sedlacek, assistant to the city administrator.

Mendota Heights resident and skater Tim Meyers was on hand to suggest further improvements that could be made.

“Most skate parks have more concrete elements that hold up to the weather and public use,” Meyers said. “With wood ramps, this stuff is going to keep happening ... “Concrete can put up with much more wear and tear.”

Meyers and another skate park user, Joe Odendahl of Bloomington, also had a few creative ideas for constructing and paying for the improvements. Both men said they are confident they could find inexpensive ways to build new pieces in the park, and mentioned sponsorship opportunities to defray cost to the city.

The men said they plan to return with specific information on costs for improvements.

“We think it’s really nice that you guys have given us this space,” Odendahl said. “We just want to make it better.”
