Memorial Day: Mendota Heights Area Prepares to Remember the Fallen

Share the memory of a soldier killed at war, and find local events for Memorial Day, May 30.

Many people know someone who has died while serving this country—whether it’s a friend, a brother or sister, a parent or grandparent, or a spouse.

While these fallen soldiers are honored, thanked and remembered throughout the year, Memorial Day is an especially good time to pay respects. Mendota Heights Patch wants to help you do that: From now through Monday, we’re asking readers to submit reflections and/or photos of veterans that made an impact in their lives.

There are a number of events scheduled locally to commemorate the fallen:

At there will be a Memorial Day Mass celebrated at 10 a.m., rain or shine. The cemetery office will have extended hours over the weekend and will be open from 8  a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday. Resurrection Cemetery is located at 2105 Lexington Avenue S.

The  will also celebrate a Memorial Day Mass beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the historic chapel. Immediately following, there will be a flag raising ceremony at St. Peter's Cemetery, located directly across Hwy. 13.

The traditional Memorial Day service at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery will take place beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday. This is an extremely popular event, so plan to arrive early.  The cemetery is located off 494-W at 7601 34th Avenue South, Minneapolis.

The marks the opening weekend of the Historic Fort Snelling Site and features individuals in period costumes offering presentations on U.S. Military History as well as other activities, including a firing demonstration. Veterans are admitted free. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, May 30.
