The forecasted heat index (how hot it feels considering both temperature and humidity) could reach 100-107 degrees during the afternoons. Overnight lows are only expected to drop into the 70s, which won't allow buildings without air conditioning to cool off.

"The prolonged nature of the heat wave...with little relief at night could cause heat related illnesses," states the advisory.

A similar advisory was posted last week as well.

Excessive heat is the leading cause of weather-related death, according to the American Red Cross, so be sure to stay alert and proactive when it's time to beat the heat.

Tips to stay cool and safe:

  • Never leave pets or children in a vehicle for any period of time during heat waves. The temperature inside a car can increase 19 degrees in 10 minutes, and it will continue to rise.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbors, especially those who live alone or who do not have air conditioning.
  • Stay out of the sun if possible, especially in the middle of the day. Exposure to direct sunlight can increase the heat index by 15 degrees.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, but leave the alcohol and caffeine behind. Drink hydrating liquids regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
