What's to Like Here?

The so-called "Truth Team" is touting the idea that 90% of young people will be subsidized. Excuse me?

I subscribe to the OFA campaign mail lists, and got this graphic in the mail today. I learn a lot about what the Obama campaign believes to be appealing to voters. I am occasionally really surprised, as I am with the graphic above.

I was raised with the idea that standing on my own two feet was a good thing. Being dependent on others was not a good thing. The word "parasite" was never used as a compliment. When I went off to college, and got my own apartment, I was proud of my independence, and even defended it against those friendly relatives who wanted to "help" me.

Every young person I have ever known, at about the same age, has had roughly the same attitude. They want to be independent.  They want to be adults, and understand that to be an adult means to pay your own bills, and stand on your own two feet. Someone who pays your bills has leverage. If you want your freedom, you have to have independence.

So why does the Obama campaign believe that dependency is a selling point? Why is it a good thing that 90% of those between 20 and 29 will get subsidies. Let's set aside the cost of this program. Let's set aside the fact that if 90% of people get subsidies, someone is paying the bill, and 90% on the dole does not work. Why is dependency appealing?

The young people I have known are right. Independence - Freedom - requires independence. Have we become a nation of enthusiastic parasites? Do we vote based on what we will "get" from government?

I pray that this administration has misjudged our young people.
