No Smoking Gun

Should we hold our president to account for the truth?

This evening, I ran across an article in CBS News about the Benghazi controversy. I was, in fact, looking for news of the newly released emails that some think are a "smoking gun". Since the article originally appeared in Slate, written by John Dickerson. I'll link to the original here.

As I read the article, I was surprised by the number of times that the author  gently condemns the Obama administration. They have "never been straight", and their claims about transparency have been "clearly false", and calls the spin by the whitehouse a "greasy effort".

This is pretty critical stuff, and throughout the article, he as much as admits that the things the GOP has been saying about the administration are true.

Yet, those emails are not a "smoking gun". In the end, he gives the president and his team a pass.

Why?

The author seems to take the attitude that it's all OK, because it's all normal spin and politics is like that - political boys will be boys.

If our president has lied to us, and did so to cover his backside in an election, isn't that a problem?
