Changes for WSP/MH Area Business Council 'Buzz'

The chamber council for Mendota Heights and West St. Paul will shift from a programming model to a meeting model.

The West St. Paul/Mendota Heights Area Business Council is changing the format of their monthly "The Buzz" programming event and will determine the details of this change at a meeting on June 7.

The West St. Paul/Mendota Heights Area Business Council is one of four such councils operating within the Dakota County Regional Chamber of Commerce. These councils exist to work locally with businesses and provide networking and community engagement opportunities.

Business council events will no longer emphasize the workshop/speaker model, and will instead place a greater emphasis on planning and development. The council will still host some programs beyond the monthly meeting.

“We felt that it was time to rejuvenate the business council,” said Carol Keyes, chair of the council and owner of Complete Health Environmental and Safety Services (CHESS).

The Dakota County Regional Chamber has worked in West St. Paul for over 50 years, and was originally named the West St. Paul Chamber of Commerce. Mendota Heights then became involved with the chamber community and was followed by Eagan and Rosemount, leading to a name change in 2007 to reflect the inclusion of many cities.

For the past three years, the West St. Paul/Mendota Heights Area Business Council has been hosting “The Buzz,” featuring seminars, workshops and speakers. Now, the chamber board of directors is planning to return to the meeting model, which the council used prior to 2009.

According to Ruthe Batulis, president of the chamber, this model will help new businesses better understand the regional community and climate.

The meeting on June 7 is an opportunity for community members to give their input, said Keyes.

“The goal is to make sure that we have strong economic growth in the region,” said Batulis. “We want businesses to locate in West St. Paul and in Mendota Heights.”

The meeting will be held at 7:30 a.m. at DARTS in West St. Paul. To register, visit the chamber website.
