Viewfinder: Mendota Heights Roads Under Construction As Far As the Eye Can See

Road construction projects have surrounded the Mendota Heights area this summer.

The old adage that Minnesota has two seasons—winter and road construction—seems particularly true this year.

Drivers in Mendota Heights, Mendota, Lilydale, West St. Paul and Eagan have been rocked hard by road construction. The road closures have caused lots of frustrations, some anger and a fender-bender or two as drivers try to make up for delays.

"They're kind of everywhere this year," said Rod Nelson of Mendota Heights. "When I go to work, when I go to the store or run errands, there's road work.

"It does get frustrating," Nelson added of the delays. "But the alternative is worse."

Getting to and from on (County Road 63) has been challenging for many weeks, but that project is nearing completion and is scheduled to be finished before the start of school. The final work is expected to be completed around Sept. 3, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Lane closures on Mendota Bridge are expected to continue through Tuesday, Aug. 30. Westbound Mendota Bridge lanes are scheduled to open by the start of Monday’s rush hour. Eastbound lanes should be ready to open before the Tuesday afternoon rush hour.

The Lafayette Bridge/Highway 52 reconstruction project isn't scheduled to be complete until 2014, but ramp closures south of the bridge are scheduled to end mid-September.

As for Interstate 35E, the Highway 110 westbound ramps are expected to open Monday, Aug. 29. Nortbound ramps connecting 35E to Highway 13 are expected to close Tuesday, Sept. 6 Tuesday, Sept. 13.
