Do Democrats Care What Anthony Weiner Did?

In a recent blog post, Donald Lee wrote, "Anthony Weiner is the poster child for the ethical calculus of the left."

"The scandals in recent years, from Weiner, to Bill Clinton, to Elliot Spitzer have a common thread. 'It's only sex.' In short, it doesn't matter," Lee wrote.

From when it was posted on July 24 through Aug. 1, more than 180 comments have been posted.

Here are some of them:

Liberaltarian: "Democrats are more likely to make a distinction between personal scandal and political scandal. I expect our leaders to have high moral and ethical standards. It seems like many of them don't. However, if forced to choose between a President who lies about a fling with an intern or a President who lies about breaking into the opposing party's headquarters, or illegally selling weapons to central American rebels, or lying to citizens about another country's weapons of mass destruction, I'll choose the guy who had the fling.

"Besides, who's defending Clinton, Weiner, or Spitzer's sexual activities? Nobody I've talked to or read. What they did was wrong. I admire Clinton, but the Lewinsky thing was a mistake. The other two guys are jokes both within and outside of the party."

Steve McKinley: "I am a Democrat and what passes today for a "Liberal." (People who think the way I do used to be called "Moderates") Having said that, I deplore Weiner and the behavior he has shown. Not an honorable person. Should not hold public office. But do not judge all Democrats on the basis of this jerk, and I will promise not to judge all Republicans on the basis of the jerks in that party."

Smokin' Joe: "Whether a lying letch like Weiner or a loony-toon like Dayton we get the representatives that we deserve. Remember Marion Berry? Obviously the majority of those who vote don't really care that much about personal integrity or responsibility, which makes it tough to work up much indignation when one of these bozos trips over their weiner. The annoying bit is that while both sides have idiotic candidates it does seem that the Democratic side gets a free pass on this type of garbage."
