Mr Hansen is a believer that this is the proper function of government. I disagree. He says theRead More law does not "require the expansion of benefits", but it does compel employers to do what they may not do today. It allows him to claim credit for what the employer provides. http://mendotaheights.patch.com/blog_posts/giving-away-what-isnt-yours

As a woman who has been a lower level employee as well as a manager, I view this to be goodRead More legislation.
Donald Lee May 22, 2013 at 10:33 pm
Good for whom? At what cost? Is it right? Is it wise? The people getting the benefits should likeRead More them. That's not the point.

With all due respect, Reverand, praying "to the one who can truly meet the needs" seemsRead More like a moot point. He should have met the needs before he sent a tornado.

On Thursday afternoon, I saw the DNR at Lake Harriet with their table and information. But thereRead More were no boats on the lake, and the DNR employees had nothing to do! Again, a vast waste of taxpayer dollars! Why are they out there on weekends, when there are more boaters???? Again, private industry has employees working when there are customers. Government doesn't care.

Fact Check: Boat launch ramps are open at 6 AM to 10 PM, 7 days per week. Fisherman, sailors andRead More others pay registration fees and fishing license fees. Clean lakes benefit all including swimmers, walkers and others who don't pay fees. Fisherman, sailors and others launch boats throughout that window. (6 AM to 10 PM) Wheel Fun Sports, a private enterprise, operates rental business for canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, etc. at both Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet is open from 9 am to 8:00 PM. Between customers Wheel Fun employees often have slow or no business periods. I volunteer on Lake Harriet, Monday nights and several boats were launched although the weather was not pleasant. I sail on Lake Calhoun extensively evenings and weekends and that boat launch is also busy depending on weather, fishing seasons, the sailboat buoy season beginning and end. The inspection is funded mostly by surcharges on watercraft licenses and fishing licenses. One alleged Thursday afternoon drive by does not provide a real picture. Mike B apparently has no experience with private enterprises that serve customers because most also have unpredictably variable customer demand daily and throughout the calendar year. You can find dead times at Home Depot, restaurants, Target, liquor stores, etc. etc.

Orono. You seem to assume my on-line fight for equal rights is a reflection of my entire life. ItRead More isn't. I've missed a few days, as I was kayak camping, without electronics. It also seems you are repeating the mistake of comparing atrocities, and then dismissing as irrelevant the one that seems less severe. This misses the point that no atrocities are acceptable. As I have stated repeatedly, all religions, as well as non-religious belief systems, promote the Golden Rule. Different sects of all of those religions also find excuses to ignore it. No matter what the belief system claimed as an excuse for anti-gay prejudice, refusing to treat others as you would yourself is a violation of every major ethical belief system, as well as a violation of the promise of equality in our founding documents and required by the constitution. Any person who espouses any belief system that requires hating and harming others, has earned the label of "hater". Having a belief system is not a virtue when it requires harming others. Yet, again, not all prejudice requires hate. It may be a result of a lack of careful consideration of the information, or simply a distrust of others who seem different in some way.
Dan Johnson June 12, 2013 at 07:08 pm
Orono. You said: "I hate liberalism." We have stated you are free to hate if and as youRead More want. But neither you, me, nor MB should be allowed to use hate as a justification for refusing to treat others as you would yourself under the law. MB makes it clear, he would use the law to harm all gay people severely, based on his hate.

Donald. Again, you resort to mischaracterizing Joyce's comment in order to support your desire toRead More reinstate discrimination in the public square. Tyrannies result when discrimination based on your choice of being offended, is allowed under the law. This is the reason the Golden Rule is found in every major ethical belief system as well as a requirement of our system of government. Your desire to harm others based on your personal beliefs, does not extend to the public square. Again, segregation is only one of many examples of the atrocities that result when prejudice and discrimination are enshrined in the law. As you said yourself, the law is needed for protection of equal rights when someone is offended, not when they are not.

Very few people want to start a business in Minnesota. This state is now run by a bunch ofRead More socialists, who are out to destroy capitalism and free enterprise. The minimum wage increase is just one manifestation of the greed of this state's government to steal from productive citizens.

Mike B If you had any moral compass you would have followed the request not to play on the ParkerRead More Family's fears. Hopefully they have turned off this thread.

I, along with most every Patch reader, welcomes the insightful and to-the-point discerning commentsRead More from the Parker family, and looks forward to their further contributions to this forum.

We patch readers are eagerly awaiting the continuing participation of the Parkers on the forum.Read More Their comments are a welcome addition on the subject of parentlng, as well as on the subject of "gay" marriage.

Regardless of whether or not they're the same person, I think if that's the biggest challengeRead More they've ever faced in life they've pretty much cruised through life. I mean, seriously, your biggest challenge is not understanding that not everyone agrees with your opinions? I would think it's a given that everyone has a right to their own opinions without feeling overwhelmed and challenged by that fact.
Mike K. May 10, 2013 at 11:35 am
Mike B. and myself are not the same person, even though we do seem to think alike on most issuesRead More discussed here. Freedom of speech and thought are good things, and sometimes can be provocative. We should all exercise these rights while we still have them. BTW, I have not "cruised" through life unscathed. Nobody has.

The question in this article is "What's the biggest challenge you've had to overcome? You'reRead More all jumping in with political comments that really, as you just admitted are NOT the biggest challlenge you have overcome. You just wanted to turn this into a "Let's bash everyone who doesn't share our belief system". Nobody really cares about your political views. Answer the question honestly or stay out of the discussion. Truly, the first person who answered that the biggest obstical he has had to overcome was realizing that everyone has a right to their own opinion and this frustrates him, he's led a VERY sheltered life. If he's frustrated about the politics in this country he could a) move to another country or b) get involved in politics iin a constructive way to bring about the changes he wants or c) shut his yap because nobody really cares that he is tantruming about not getting everyone to step in line behiind him.

This sentence does not make sense. "Quarts of the homemade chowder will be available for $4 perRead More cup or $10 for a pint." A quart is two pints, so I guess a quart of the chowder is $20.
MikeL April 25, 2013 at 12:09 pm
...or is it $16? (4 cups = 1 quart)
Diane Baum April 19, 2013 at 04:58 pm
there are still way too many questions than answers right now. I think as it stands, thoseRead More unanswered questions are doing more to scare folks...especially after reading the first few paragraphs that plainly state how much the penalty is for NOT having insurance!!! Why not just make it easier on all of us instead of making more hoops to jump through...and $80 MILLION dollars is already spent on implementing this??????? What do we the people have to show for that??

Now all that is needed is for a few politicians to post how hard they are working on improving theRead More economy and creating jobs. The ACA looks like another nail in the coffin of small business. Complexity leads to collapse.

Part of the immigration bill may exclude the amnestied from receiving benefits under the PPACA, ifRead More this is so, will an employer have to pay the annual fine for not providing health care or will the employer receive a benefit by hiring amnestied workers over hiring an American citizen?
