Cody - Reusable bags do not spread disease, that is illogical. Do you give your bags away unclean?Read More And they can be washed, just like your clothing. They have no more likelihood of spreading bacteria than the shoes and jacket you wear every day. Or the same toothbruth you stick in your mouth, hopefully twice a day. As for paper towels, unless you are composting them, they absolutely can NOT be recycled. If they are soiled with food or other items, they are a contaminant in the paper recycling.

Wise up Emily. I do not go to the store, put my food in my shoe then travel home with it in theRead More shoe. There are plenty of studies to show those reusable canvas bags are a disease magnet compared to recyclable plastic bags. Smug housewives hardly wash them on average. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------In the example above the paper towel was used for drying a clean surface. I don't have any idea where you got the food part in there. And regardless you can still recycle them, food or not. In the real world === the one I live in === your recyclables are going to come in contact with tons of waste, junk and other variables that need to be cleaned. Have you seen the inside of a recycling truck? Single sort or not? The first step before any processing in a recycling facility is cleaning. The end user will wash again before they send to production.

It is true you don't put your food in your shoes, but you do bring a lot of toxins and bacteria intoRead More your home via your shoes - Everything from antifreeze on parking lot surfaces, pesticides and dog poo from lawns, molds etc. The point was simply that reusable bags aren't likely vectors any more than many of our every day items (ever looked at studies of the bacteria on your phone? Yikes!) I'm not a housewife as you seem to want to suggest, but wash my bags (I'd like to see your study of those smug housewives though).---- As for paper towels, yes the example said "wet" but that doesn't inherently mean clean. To me that could be juice from fruit or meat or who knows what. She did say a tea towel can hold more water, so I can see how we read this differently (I think "water" can represent any number of liquids in the kitchen). I think you should contact the recycling industry to get more information about soiled paper being ok for paper recycling. Single sort is actually quite a challenge for paper recyclers, as they're getting lower and lower quality materials (a big issue is broken glass that often sticks to paper due to food residues and liquids). "Cleaning up" paper doesn't work the same way as plastics, metals and glass, so food soiled paper should not be going in the recycling.
