Do you want to know where lawful gun owners live in your neighborhood? Should this information not only be public but publicized?

Take our poll and leave a comment below.

"Overkill?" asks The Daily Beast, writing about the publication by The Journal News on Dec. 22 of gun permit holders across three counties in New York state. The database article on LoHud.com includes a map with dots for each household licensed to own a handgun—pistols and revolvers.

The map has gone viral, having been widely tweeted and liked on Facebook almost 28,000 times as of Dec. 26.

INCREASE IN GUN PERMIT APPLICATIONS
You're unlikely to see the same kind of map for Minnesota.

"In Minnesota, addresses of permit holders is private data and not available without a court order," explained Cmdr. Paul Sommer of the Anoka County Sheriff's Office by email Wednesday.

That's not to say there's not a lot of local activity.

In the days after the Newtown, CT, shooting, Dakota County experienced an uptick in applications for permits to carry a pistol.

Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows said the county received 30 requests Monday following the shooting, about three times higher than the typical day of processing.

Minnesotans held 91,221 permits to carry guns as of Dec. 31, 2011, according to MinnPost.

PLAYDATE DILEMMA
Some parents, in the wake of the Newtown school shootings, have expressed their desire to know which homes their kids might be playing in have potentially lethal weapons in them.

One woman wrote on Tarrytown-Sleepy Hollow Patch’s Facebook page: “I just watched on the news: 38 percent of the people in America have a gun in their houses. Should we ask about this when our children go to a playdate?”

In Minneapolis earlier this month, a 4-year-old boy shot and killed his 2-year-old brother when they found a loaded gun hidden in a bed.

PRIVACY VIOLATED?
This is the second time the newspaper and website has published database reporting on gun ownership. The release of the info online this year has some gun advocates worried for their safety and complaining of their privacy infringement, according to the Daily Beast

The information was obtained by filing Freedom of Information requests.

The Journal News management stands behind its decision. "We knew publication of the database would be controversial, but we felt sharing as much information as we could about gun ownership in our area was important in the aftermath of the Newtown shootings," CynDee Royle, editor and vice president/news of The Journal News, said to the Daily Beast.

As a gun owner, I have no problem with it. It just lets the bad guys know which homes are safe to hit, and which ones, like mine, will be hazardous to their health.

It's nobody's business to know without a person's prior written consent. For a journal to publish this information is an invasion of an individual's privacy.

Making that information public was a moronic move on many levels, wonder how many people were harassed by gun ban avocets before any laws were changed.why don't you make drunk driving idiots public seeing how they kill more children every year anyways, hell why not make beer illegal and you'll save more lives, but nobody is attacking them.point is that some people are riding this horse too hard and it will not end on a good note.try finding the real problem instead

That could become the first step down a very slippery slope. It tells thieves where to steal guns, which we probably prefer not to do. It allows those government leaders who may be so inclined (Richard Nixon, Dick Cheney, or anybody else who would like to have more power any way they can get it) a database to go after should they decide it is in their best interests to do so. It also could be used by any group so inclined, to harass or intimidate the individuals with guns.

I think that this would be useful if you are buying a house. It would serve the same purpose as knowing that sex offenders live in a neighborhood. It would be another tool to know when house hunting. It would also be beneficial to the police, firemen or EMS knowing that there are weapons in a house before they respond.

LOL, at Euge! Ridiculous, that u would want to know the private gun owners in the neighborhood if buying! The rest fo you agreed! It is private to the owner. They were able to apply and receive a permit through the police station, then a conceal and carry permit through the dakota county courthouse. SO, if there are gun-owners in your neighboorhood, it could be relief to know that there are armed citizens in your block!..Not beneficial to police either, it is not their business to know who has what. Is it beneficial to you to know who has a pipe or bat or crowbar, that they could intentionally use to inflict harm on you too? Really there are over 350 million guns owned in the US. Lets be logical and resonable at the same time. Mind your own business when it comes to private lives of citizens. Almost all of those are not used to kill people. Stupidity. Actually the bat is the number one violent crime weapon being used in the U.S. So maybe all of our boys need to be registered and monitered BEFORE going to the field for practice......Where the hell is common-sense and respect for the rights of Americans gone???

Oh yeah, Euge, I thought maybe you'd prefer to have the mental health records of people in the neighboorhood too. Actually that would be a great idea for the gun crime psychos that are out there doing this crap. But hell that'd be tons of citizens own kids (that had reached 18, no longer juvenile). it would also be many of your own adult neighbors that have to go see a shrink or counselor and are on xanax or prozac..hmmm. those are the people that have no stability. It's not the guns, its the type of person...Ohhhh, when we talk about mental health records, then its a different story, no-one wants to do that...obviously too many adults are on them!!!
