Mendota Heights Halloween Bonfire Tradition Lives On
Despite reconstruction, the Halloween bonfire will again be held at Mendota Plaza.
The Annual Mendota Heights Halloween Bonfire will once again ignite at Mendota Plaza 7-9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31.
The bonfire was first organized in 1974 by the family of Russell Wahl, a former city council member and most recently a building inspector serving Mendota and Lilydale. When his children grew up, he passed the task on to the Mendota Heights Fire Department. Wahl died in March.
Mendota Heights residents can start bringing brush to the Plaza between the hours of 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. starting Monday, Oct. 24. Brush collection will stop Friday, Oct. 28 at the end of the business day or when the brush pile is full, whichever is first.
Brush must be less than 4 inches in diameter. No grass clippings or leaves are allowed.
The fire department will again serve up hot dogs and soda while Plaza businesses will stock goodie bags for visitors.

Love the community bonfire, but will never make it there. Can we do it another night too?!
Halloween is a night we are busy handing out candy at home and going around the neighborhood with kids.

I agree. It sounds great, but there's too much going on in the neighborhood on Monday. Saturday or Sunday would have been better choices.

Glad to hear the tradition will live on. Kudos to all the folks that are generous with time and property in order to pull this event off.

Dear Mr Dugan, what would Mendota Heights be without you. Certainly not as great a place as it is. Your intellect, perseverance, dedication and wit are all so greatly appreciated by those of us who know you. As a 30 plus year resident, I wish to thank you for your many great years of service on our city council. I could only hope the future ballots would let me choose great political leaders such as you.
